Legacy Day: A Day of Learning, Sharing and Preparing for the Future

Seymour Helping Hands was proud to host its very first Legacy Day on Thursday, September 3rd, and what a wonderful day it turned out to be!

Legacy Day was created with one simple goal in mind: to bring valuable information to our community that can help individuals and families make informed decisions, protect themselves, and prepare for the future. By the end of the day, we had covered a little bit of everything—and hopefully gave everyone something they could take home and put to good use.

Throughout the day, attendees had the opportunity to learn more about the Alzheimer’s Association and the resources available to individuals and families dealing with Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia. We also learned about Medicare, including the importance of understanding your coverage and making informed decisions when it comes to your healthcare.

Catholic Charities joined us to explain the many ways they assist individuals and families in need, while we also had the opportunity to learn about online safety and ways to better protect ourselves from scams and other dangers that can come with using technology.

One of the most important—and sometimes hardest—topics we discussed was planning for the end of life. We talked about the importance of having our affairs in order, including wills, trusts, and other preparations that can make an already difficult time a little easier for our families. These aren't always easy conversations to have, but they are important ones.

We were also fortunate to have information and resources available through the Department of Aging, along with other organizations and individuals who gave their time to help make the day possible.

And, of course, no good Seymour event would be complete without some good food! We enjoyed visiting with one another, sharing a meal, asking questions, and simply spending time together as a community.

Perhaps one of the best parts of the day was that we were able to wrap things up a little earlier than expected. While we certainly didn't mind getting in some extra learning, everyone was probably happy to get home before spending too much time out in that September Texas heat!

Our first Legacy Day was a wonderful reminder of what can happen when our community comes together to learn, share and help one another prepare for the future.

Seymour Helping Hands would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to everyone who attended, everyone who shared their knowledge, and every organization that helped make our first Legacy Day possible.

We hope this is just the beginning of Legacy Day and that we can continue bringing helpful information, resources and opportunities to our community for many years to come.

Sometimes preparing for tomorrow starts with simply taking the time to learn something today.
